• Yes, he or she will need to do the Phonics Assessments with the English Enrichment Head teacher, Head of Curriculum or Head of Lorna Whiston Schools. This assessment takes place in a 1:1 setting for approximately 30 minutes.
• An additional assessment (known as diagnostic) will also be taken in the first session with the teacher. This will include baseline skills such as letter formation, handwriting and phonological awareness skills.

For the student:
• One of the most important goals in LW Marvel is to increase a child’s confidence in themselves as a learner.
• This assessment data will be used at the mid-point and end-point of the programme to show the student how far they have progressed, with all their hard work.
• We will use their own work to empower the student and demonstrate to themselves how much their skills have grown.
For the teachers:
• This baseline information will give the teacher information as to the child’s current level of letter formation, handwriting and phonological awareness skills.
• It allows the teacher to observe current habits and any strategies the child currently uses within the skill areas.
• It will help us differentiate the programme for each child.

• Initial assessment enables Lorna Whiston to make ‘well-matched’ groups with similar skill sets in one classroom.
• The programme has a Teacher and a Teacher’s Assistant in each class.
• The combination of two teaching professionals and well-matched groups of students allows the programme to be delivered in a small group.

• The programme is 20 weeks long.
• It is broken up into 2 x 10 week terms (except for the initial pilot group that starts mid-way through Term 2 and ends mid-way through Term 4)
• Parents will be getting a progress report at the end of lesson 10 and lesson 20.

Yes. The programme is a systematic and structured programme that builds on and consolidates skills from week to week.

• The programme is based on the skill level and development for the K2-P1 age group.
• It is based on fundamental skills required for K2 and P1 students and aims to systematically develop, build and practice the foundational skills required for academic success in K2-P1.

Each class will have one Teacher and one Teacher’s Assistant to support the students.

Your child will receive the worksheets for the missed lesson, but there will not be a replacement given in LW Marvel. The replacement class will be given in our Fun with Phonics classes.
