Five Must Have Online Learning Tips for Parents

Over the past year, many children have had to revert to online lessons due to school closures. Others have had to study independently or with support from parents on their learning journey.

Some parents find the idea of online learning exciting, while others are filled with fear as they wonder how they are going to fulfill their other commitments and teach their child. Don’t worry we have it covered! We’ve put together five handy tips to help you with your child’s online learning journey.

Establish a Routine!

It is so important to set up a routine and maintain it where possible. This helps to keep the online learning structured and on track. We recommend you create an online learning timetable. Your child can help you devise how the timetable will be broken up. Perhaps you could include homework, revision, free play and physical activities, or other subjects they have on their study chart. We urge all parents to include outdoor physical activities to boost their child’s holistic development. Once the timetable is complete ensure your child is in agreement and then set the start date.

Allow your child to be the decision maker!

Let your child decide on free play activities. Ask them what they want to do and what they would like to learn more about. It could be drama, singing or finding out facts about bugs and butterflies. It’s a wonderful opportunity to explore their interests while allowing your child to have the freedom to choose.

Go travelling…In your own home!

Have fun planning an imaginary journey or a possible future holiday. Firstly, select a country. For our example we have chosen Italy. Show them where Italy is on the map, tell them how many kilometers away from home it is. Tell them about school life in Italy and compare differences to their school. Talk about well-known cuisine in that country such as, ‘’Pizza’’! Finish off this fun geography activity by learning a few words from the Italian language. Buon Viaggio!

TV Time!

Turning on the television should not be considered an easy way for parents to keep their child occupied. Using television time purposefully in order to educate your child is very important. Nature documentaries like Blue Planet and others are engaging for children. Fun cartoons in the company of ‘’Dora’’ our lovable explorer are educational too. Plan ahead and schedule these educational shows into your timetable, involve your child in the selection. Remember to have clear time limits on screen time.

Go outside if you can!

Get out of the house if you can, go for a walk to your local park nothing beats the great outdoors! Turn it into a learning activity by looking for little bugs, interesting birds or unique plants along the way. Remember to take photos on the walk to share with the rest of the family. Have fun!
